Growing US Austerity Emblematic of Systemic Economic Failure –The “C” Word Must be Part of the National Narrative
On tonight’s show, Sandy LeonVest is joined by UC Berkeley economist and labor researcher Sylvia Allegretto. They discuss the ways in which recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) stand to impact not only the “working poor,” but the entire economy. They also look at growing austerity measures in the US — and the ways in which “food austerity,” as one component of corporate capitalism, together with low wages and obscene corporate profits, is undermining labor, which (at least until the past few decades), has been considered the backbone of the US economy. Later in the hour, Sandy and Sylvia listen to historian, economist, author and progressive visionary Gar Alperovitz. They discuss the importance of broadening the national conversation to include fearless analysis of the “C” words (corporate capitalism).
